OBJET LIVRE
-
un synopsis ;
-
une présentation de l’œuvre et de sa conception graphique ;
-
un extrait représentatif du texte ;
-
au moins cinq illustrations originales ;
-
la longueur prévue du livre et une estimation du nombre d’illustrations ;
-
une courte notice biographique de l’auteur et de l’illustrateur ;
-

International Call for Illustrated Book Proposals
Stories for Readers from 15 to 115
The Western book has a long history of relationships between text and image. In medieval manuscripts, illumination structures the reading, interprets the narrative, marks its divisions, and may itself carry part of the story. With the advent of printing, this relationship took on new forms without disappearing. In Paris at the end of the fifteenth century, Philippe Pigouchet gave it particularly accomplished expression in his Books of Hours, where type, engravings, historiated borders, and the arrangement of the page form a whole conceived as such from the outset.
Éditions Pigouchet places OBJET LIVRE within this history.
We seek to publish books in which illustration belongs to the very conception of the work. Text and image may follow one another, alternate, respond to one another, or assume different moments of the narrative. Some sequences may be entrusted entirely to images; elsewhere, the text may carry the narrative alone. Their proportion and arrangement remain open. We are looking for projects in which removing the images would mean altering the work itself.
OBJET LIVRE welcomes narratives for readers from 15 to 115. This formula defines a conception of reading rather than an age category: works accessible from adolescence and capable of accompanying the reader far beyond it.
Novels, historical narratives, adventure, fantasy, tales of wonder, mystery, travel, memory, science, art, and heritage all have a place here. This list is not exhaustive. The quality of the writing, the necessity of the images, and the coherence of the book will determine our selection.
Illustration
Each project must be based on original graphic work.
We welcome drawing, engraving, painting, watercolour, photography, collage, mixed media, and digital illustration. Other techniques may of course be proposed.
AI-generated images are not accepted. This rule also applies to illustrations created primarily from images produced by generative AI systems.
The writing and illustrations may be the work of the same person or of two creators. In the latter case, the project should be submitted jointly.
Submitting a Project
The submission should include:
-
a synopsis;
-
a presentation of the work and its graphic conception;
-
a representative sample of the text;
-
at least five original illustrations;
-
the projected length of the book and an estimate of the number of illustrations;
-
a short biographical note on the author and illustrator;
-
a link to the illustrator’s portfolio, if available.
Both completed manuscripts and works in progress are eligible. For a work still in development, the material submitted should make it possible to understand the intended structure of the book and the way in which text and images will relate to one another.
Selection
Each proposal will undergo editorial, literary, and artistic evaluation.
When a project is selected, Éditions Pigouchet will contact its author and/or illustrator to discuss its final form and the terms of publication. Every publication will be governed by a publishing agreement defining the rights granted, formats, dissemination, distribution, and remuneration of the creators.
